Ball State Field Trips App

Identity System, Branding, Print, Interactive App and Web Design

"Ball State Field Trips aims to create powerful learning tools for elementary students and teachers across the state in celebration of the bicentennial. Indiana Pioneers: 200 Years of Incredible Hoosiers and Big Ideas is all about our state’s history and the people that made it."

During the summer of 2016, the Digital Corps of Ball State University revamped a project formally known as Electronic Field Trips and created the new and improved, Ball State Field Trips. The project focused on taking students on educational, virtual field trips to featured locations around the world. In the past, for each location, a live show was produced and streamed directly to classrooms. In addition to that tradition, an interactive app featuring additional video, articles, activities, and photos was created to compliment the live stream. I was given the opportunity to co-lead the rebranding and design of the app along with designer, Grace Winiger, and also worked alongside developers, videographers, and a team of UX designers. The theme for this Field Trip was called "Indiana Pioneers: 200 Years of Incredible Hoosiers and Big Ideas", celebrating Indiana's Bicentennial. The project attracted over 250 educators and 6,000 elementary students across 91 different cities across Indiana.

Interactive App

The Ball State Field Trips app contains supplementary material that go along with the live show. These materials include activities, photos, videos, and articles. Focus groups and research were conducted by our UX team to determine how children interact with digital applications and how we should design the app to best fit their needs.

Something I personally focused on while working on the this project was creating a variety of characters that would represent all of the different children who may interact with the app.

Branding and Marketing

A variety of promotional items were created to help spread the word about Field Trips to educators, parents, and students. T-shirts were created for the project team and care packages that included a tote bag, notebook, and pens, were given to educators who helped us write content for the lesson plans within the app. Postcards were sent out to various schools and bookmarks were given out at expos at the Indiana State Museum.

A main site and teacher site were additional components created for the Field Trips project. Grace and I created the designs for both websites and helped with the HTML and CSS for the main site. Additionally, I individually developed and designed an integrated marketing site that was created to show our marketing techniques during the project.
